Students at Manchester School celebrate Community Day 2019

good morning everybody we're going to start with the school song the message of the song Forest talks about all those things that will help us have a better world Bianchi. go away show me Tennessee some of that song Philadelphia weather weather radar Subway Subway Leon we all need thank you that was pretty pretty good for a new song for us next job I am for those visitors I've never met a misdemeanor and I'm the very proud principal of Manchester High School glad to welcome you all here to the special day for us and for those of you who haven't been here before I'll just give you a little rundown we worked hard all year to help kids to be engaged in there today is the day where we kind of shine ourselves and show the community how we've done that all the different ways that we've learned about community and engaged but then we also are surrounded if you look at the chairs why was behind the saw we're surrounded by the community who supports us every day the people that we don't always think about so we want to thank them for coming and I wanted to just make sure that I thanked the custodians who helped to set up the food service would help put on the breakfast for everybody because sometimes I think I forget that and they really do a lot of work behind the scenes all day I thought about something this week watching the news news is always talking about how we be respectful of differences and respect each other and some of the grown-ups in the world are not doing Bubba. I'm proud of what we're doing here and grown-ups like to say that kids are the future they'll take care of us when we're all right we know each of you sitting on the floor they know is that you're not the future you're right now actually, it's always in the moment what you're doing in the moment that matters and instead of teaching social set in government and Community practices in a textbook what you have done is you thought about what you care about and you've been actively engaged in that work that's what community is all about and Community for us is about with helping each other when things are tough and some things Our Town even as kids and helping each other in good time celebrating like today are you having fun together which I know you guys do really well so that's what today is about being a couple speakers to come up and then we have a slideshow so for the 4th graders who haven't been a community day before this very cool cuz you're going to get to see yourselves into hopefully you look really carefully and then you'll go back to your classes and groups of people will come up and explain all the different centers because we could have everyone come up today we be here till noon sitting on the floor so I just wanted to make sure we're thinking our school board members for showing up it's a lot to come out on a day like today it's not the spring weather we had hoped for like to thank our special guest from the community of squirrels we have Representatives that you're at Young's hair from later this at this morning that our principles superintendent from our school we have the technology director here and we have our service members please fire kind of service people that help us every day so it's a really special time. I'm on this special day I just want to take a minute tell you a little story about our first speaker who is problem totally expecting this but mr. Sandy print is our superintendent and he's going to talk to you about him because it's 25 years ago yeah little me I was a college graduate with a teaching degree and I wanted to be a teacher so bad I lived in Colorado when I moved to Maine and I learned that I needed to take one for class expectations are pretty high I needed one more class field get a teaching job so I register for that class and my professor showed up for the class and it was mistress can be friends passing away that was so engaging it wasn't a textbook we didn't read chapters and memorize things and take quizzes and there were projects we had to drop an egg and work as a team for the whole eggs and crack he brought in speakers who are real teachers who helped us all know what the real teaching world was like it was very engaging that was my first meeting with mr. print fast forward a few years later 16 years ago Mr Prince I got a job here he showed up at 16 years ago after being a teacher and I was like too hot really good guy and I knew that we had a good leader superintendent for those of you who might not know it's the boss of everybody everybody gets a paycheck from bus drivers to custodians to every team every principle is difference is our boss our leader that's a big job and he's responsible for all the good things that happen here in the whole RSU including Raymond are you press it right Slater lights I'd get another degree and I needed someone to help me with this project so I thought here by the water as a mentor for me the scripture in can you help me and he said yes and he helped me through that process until I finished my Advanced degree once again being that safe and respectful person that we could always try I thought we would just take a minute today and thank him because he's retiring this is his last Community Day unless he comes back as a gallant and something to give him pictures of the Vikings China's box project alive who is youer than you unless someone like you cares a whole lot nothing is going to get better it's not it's over smile because it happened Sylvester Prince has the opportunity we've invited him to speak to guys just for a couple minutes this morning as our keynote speaker thank you friends is Morgan everybody thank you boys and girls we need to be here today what I'd like to do is make sure that we're all inclusive today that everybody can dissipate as be fought together I don't want to talk at you like pot with you and I would like to welcome all the community members parents staff School Board volunteer all the employees and certainly the kudos to the people who arranged for this to happen to me and for the boys and girls the theme hits Karen for Kids World. Listen carefully there was a girl in the state of Maine 10 years old probably Rowley White Pages 212 Manchester School Manchester School in Windham Maine Manchester School up in Mantua and her name was Samantha Smith store near me Horror Story change the world you may have read about her me too she signed up to the Soviet Union leadership and she asked him questions first question why do you want to go to war with the United States nuclear weapons the third question gas can you bring joy and peace to the United States and Soviet the leader of the Soviet Union price only invited her forward to that country which started the making of having peace between the United States and Philippines is back in 1982 and as a result safer world she was on national TV ABC CBS if you go to Augusta and the state museum is a statue anthem I should really good change the world and that you care about one another and you care about the world I think you two make a difference well it's about giving back out about receiving and one of the things that I did to this week sometimes I go on to Ted Talk and I just look at different top excited talk about and one of the oldest if not the most oldest study that came out of the world and Harvard University the question that they were studying over 75 years what takes somebody to live a healthy long life Ellen wildlife and they study over 700 and all those years a lot of those people passed away and now they're down to 80 and the still asking the same question I mean answer to that it has to do with relationships how you connect with people not only having a few friends and their relationships is not about how many friends it's about the quality of that relationship that's what I like about you and caring for your community and for the world are about people and you care with your friends and teachers parents what's important here is that we all want to live a healthy life but we want to make a difference and then make a difference if you're going to have to care and you're going to have to have friends and really enjoyed people that you hang around with I have to tell you 39 years ago I came into the school I start teaching in Windham that time I was only one. I wonder Megan and this girl had no walls I want any walls in the classroom and it was a person service day and was the first time that really staff were trained on computers morning chair is there was a person this is Luis who sat next to me I was a new teacher very young and she connected with me she made me laugh funny I enjoyed her so and I can barely remember where my keys are everyday but I remember that day coming to the school really made a difference for me have somebody like mrs. Lewis and that relationship so I only share that I do because I think this school does a phenomenal job with making sure that each of you and all your needs are met with in the spool to pop call center as a reminder to you and thank you so much for letting me verify thinking today let's remember Samantha Smith and she made a difference she cared a lot about people and I think your projects and what you doing today you can do the same thing thank you so much thank you so much for your friends the thing that mister Princess once in awhile and it fits so much what about today if you had a son rise up all his wisdom and everything he's ever told us and meetings and hard times and trying to make decisions about what's the best he always says it's about the engagement right about the engagement added you're going to see a lot of Engagement in the cycle of you getting to community and Community giving to you today so I'd like to bring up our first Speaker or first gasket which is this is pretty I'm right up and her dad made it right up. Good morning Manchester so I'm so happy this is my favorite day of the year we spend everyday learning to read write Math Science Social Studies or learning what's in your heart and what you're able to to everybody from your teachers classroom to the school the penny to the classrooms that I did gave all our classroom speak trips finger family fun night is giving to an organization I'm very vested in the Travis Mills organization he has two of our bird houses all red what do you do all year long in my eyes this this tops so I'm very happy to be here for 15 years when the Millworks has donated water to my classroom to build birdhouses I have over 200 horses from Aristocats 20 Downton Long Island New York policeman on my summer camp lake and and bird houses weather forecast Cherry Embassy and I'll introduce him anyway but I would love to resend my class of blonde Horseman and Veterans and important citizens to stand up and come on over okay who is the girl please Fish and Game Inland Fisheries service K-9 Howell Reserve America I do have a little surprised because when I was asked what was community Frisco when we created this day for you to demonstrate your skills of heart and Community given I said the people who are and courageous it's the people who are brave is the people who give Community everyday I wonder who they are there standing right in front of you they wake up every morning demonstrating bravery courage and giving to the community I want to invite you on the person to stand up mister Prince of our class this year why didn't Michelle price per doubts long time ago when we put them around buildings in our community and so he had a birdhouse but not one to take so today I'm going to quickly out of my children presenter birdhouses for 10 years I always baked cookies I was told there is in the world but I decided I'm not making this year my new passion is all my children from last year on my fifth graders is to Fossil hunting on the Kennebec River so instead of cookies every single recipient of a fossil and then it's just a memory they can sit on their desk or sit on the Shelf while they admire their birds outside so show 93 Z28 Camaro when is New Holland recognize next next recipient why don't we talk about him I know we don't know him. and just mr. Gifford he was in the Korean War and we had a wonderful time learning about his service over there and recipient then you probably recognize this is officially he's Master Sergeant Pappas and he has served time in Afghanistan and all over Europe the amazing mr. Thorne with Rob Gronkowski from the Ronald McDonald House provide up is Robin are you in the house I'm hoping after I'm going to be on this shirt and test age of leaving the school and collect tank tops for the Ronald McDonald House was too and maybe one of our lives in Tyson up like a school news find them in my mailbox on my desk at least once a week somebody brought in baggie somebody view just barely a school-wide community-wide Gathering of tab tops I do thank you and I'm going to hand it over to Robin I'm honored to be here in fact I'm also honored to say that my background was a teacher as well so when I come into a school I feel like I'm coming home there was just really fun to see all of you kids here the Ronald McDonald House serve 600 families last year from the state of New Hampshire and Beyond understand that every one of those tabs when we picked recycle there's a certain amount of money that is raised each of those tab top two although we charge $75 a night we asked our families food if they can contribute $10 a night problem is we just said goodbye to a family that was at our house for 290 I said goodbye to another I need to think about it and I said night really adds up and I know you guys are working on fraction but I'll give you the 290 * 10 is 11 each of those pennies that we learn from these out of time. Thornton to the office out of your pockets and everything it's nice that you remember that when you're at home Ronald McDonald House does Allah for families with sick children and a wonderful thing to have in our community this is the part of the presentation where you guys get to look for yourself and your smiling faces and I just want to say a special day this is because she doesn't slide show and it's a ton of work but this year kind of like that April storm that surprised the slideshow disappeared on her end what are the hours she had done the whole thing and yesterday she had to work to pull every slide back in and make this presentation for today so thanks tivities service projects and learn projects throughout here you think about it first one was Penny War right volume the September baby Spider-Man and students are coming out McDonald's toys for this certain animal shelter there still projects about going out on all the time one of the projects that still in the worst hasn't happened yet there is talk about that one I'm sorry it's just a bunch of students Manchester's good morning Manchester School community members and parents thank you for coming out to our community day our projects are there any hotel until today I'm going to show you what I got talent show that your way of 49 and perceived after Manchester School this year show is on Thursday April 25th at 6 Woodland High School in Ontario Auditorium you can buy our tickets are $5 Manchester score now I like to introduce Olivia gutters dancing to Expedia I see what I have. it's so quiet 48 in addition to Olivia will be at our talent show so and it helps us bicycles fun things for science really fun time and there's more comfortable chairs just so I know speaker in this after this afternoon even louder ready. Pizza dad who was the science teacher science teacher if your 5th Grader he will be your principal next year so please thank you so much I was a great in it as entertaining as Olivia's the standard is my cell to work Miami students next year so next year we read about away from becoming 6th graders and you together in the next couple weeks after braids call Tanner just myself to talk about six straight to talk about expectations will be arranging some visits for you to come to Windham Middle School Step Up day your parents and yourself will be getting mailed to you show me your new teachers should be able to see your new classrooms would be able to see which friends you're a really exciting time so I feel very privileged to meet all of you I haven't had an opportunity today to look around. Because I got here a little bit late so I'm very excited to see has been put out of the slideshow is amazing all the students that come out today and presented things was amazing song I'm very happy to be here today is the weather in All Eyez on Me and people paying attention is to I should be able to deliver a message today that are now that might help you make some good choices later on so I guess the idea of we have a community we have Role Models you have a role model look around you are a role model to somebody in this community as adults somebodiness Community students silent short hands how many of you have a role model whether to this community whether it's Grandma and Grandpa weather in weather in somebody that is famous whether somebody that works in government weather should next door name for the students here silent showing how many of you that you might be a role model to somebody else very good I also put those hands down establishes at in a community like ours in Windham which is a great Community from the adults to USD I want I want to make sure that we also understand is that an idea of model and modeling isn't about loading up and showing off the new suitors one. Is that weed show we present to everybody the types of behaviors that we value the types of behaviors that build strong relationships model to somebody else that our children are watching us by listening to us or see how we react to particular situations that they are believe me I've learned that turn away as a parent as the adults in the wrong is that our power whether we went to we think we have to really show our students are kids play around this is how we handle situations how would we respect others how we listen to ideas well, maybe talk conversations about things kids are watching us their intention and as students at students that are watching you that you that they look up to you but they do you make your little brother a little sister looks like but they do you may not know looks up to you but they do as we go forward let's model some respect for me right now do one voice as we go forward that all of us in the room is this community to get stronger that we're early modeling for the behaviors that we want to see that we always show our kids the ways that we saw and then we have the power to influence other people's behavior and both ways so I hope I hope you have something to say thank you so much for showing stop for showing the committed to coming here today or service number so we have people vacation I don't want to wait to meet all of you I look forward to seeing you all after a break thank you very much.
